This is an interview that I conducted with my friend and classmate, Amy Stevens.
The task set by one of our lecturers was to interview a classmate and find out something about them that we didnt already know and provide personal details about them such as their general behaviour and their appearance. I chose not to do the latter, due to the limited word count and the information that Amy gave me, I decided to fill the article with facts about her writing rather than what colour shoes she was wearing!
This was met with slightly negative feedback from the lecturer but I'm pleased with the final article because I think I've provided alot of information interesting information about Amy. Please see below and make your own judgements.
"My first impression of Amy was that she was a shy but friendly girl who is simply stretching her creative muscles by taking a course in Creative and Professional Writing at the University of Wolverhampton.
I was partly wrong…as the saying goes; it’s the quiet ones you have to watch. Underneath her shy exterior is a talented writer with a small but loyal fan base who will go far in the years to come.
Amy has been a regular blogger and fan-fiction writer for two years and when I asked how she first became involved in this she told me how it all started with the ‘Twilight Saga’. She read the first book and described it as “awesome!” Since then she has been hooked on all things ‘Twilight’; films, books, merchandise, the actors and fan websites.
“I started just looking for general fan websites and came across a short story which used the characters names, but the story was written in a different way, other fans could get involved and basically rewrite the ending.”
From then on, Amy has written various stories using the Twilight characters, providing different endings but also using them in an entirely different setting. She is a regular on www.thefreedomfanfictionwriters.com, which honoured her with an award called “Story that makes you want to hug your computer” as nominated and voted for by her fellow fans and peers.
Her most recent project is her blog which is a long running story called “Doctors Orders” which sees the characters Bella, Edward, Alice and Jasper working as surgeons in a New York hospital. She has three blogs which are all linked and she has a total of 43 followers who have encouraged and supported her writing.
“My peers on www.thefreedomfanfictionwriters.com encouraged me to start this blog. I like to end every chapter with a cliff hanger because it keeps them coming back!”
It is clear that this is something that Amy is very passionate about. She talks animatedly about her stories and the work she puts into her blog.
Amy started a foundation Art course last year but left because she found it too restrictive. “I enjoy art, but I find writing gives me more freedom.”
However art is something that flows over in to her writing, she uses visuals to help her writing process. She begins by writing a synopsis of the story, and then using photo-shop, she creates a book cover graphic using the characters pictures.
Due to legal restrictions, Twi-Hard Amy will not be able to publish her Twilight stories, so where does she see herself as a writer in the future?
“Fan-fiction is my hobby, but it has helped me develop my skills. In the future I hope to write a novel. Recently I have started to write a story which uses Alice and Jasper from Twilight but I have added characters of my own. I’m slowly weaning myself off ‘Twilight!’ ”
Amy has given herself a great start to her career and I hope to see big things from her. She takes great pride and enjoyment in her work but is far too modest. Although a word of warning to anyone who wants to read Amy’s work, it’s not for the faint hearted or prudish. Her stories are not appropriate for anyone under the age of 18!"
